KARACHI: Former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zaka Ashraf has rebuffed the proposal of diminishing the role of departments in the domestic circuit of Pakistan and said that any hasty decision, in this regard, would have adverse impact on country’s cricket structure. “This is not the time for such changes. The departments have great contribution to the development of cricket in the country. Abolishment of departmental cricket would be disastrous”, said Zaka Ashraf, while talking to this correspondent, for News One TV.
As per media reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board is contemplating a radical change in its domestic cricket structure which would see the abolishment of departmental cricket. According to the proposal, the departments and banks, instead of fielding their own teams, should take over sponsorship/management of a region which would play the first class tournaments.
Zaka Ashraf further said that if the change in the structure was imperative even then it should not be finalised without having deliberation with all the stakeholders. “Before reaching the final decision, the PCB management should hold consultative meetings in all regions and call a meeting of departments as well for thorough deliberation on the matter”, said Zaka Ashraf.
“However, I am not in favour of this modification”, concluded the former chairman.
